Google Adds +1 Buttons To Display Ads
2011, Sep 26
Social-enabled ad campaigns get another
tool to market as Google plans to roll out +1 buttons in display ads. So if you
like an ad you can +1 it and your friends will be able to see your
recommendation on the page.
This +1 button will appear on all Google
display ads, both web and mobile, from October. It will also be integrated in
search ads and search results. Ads could be in any format including animated
GIFs, Flash or mobile ads. A small footnote will be displayed on the bottom of
the ad where the +1 recommendation button can be seen along with profile
pictures of friends. Google also gives advertisers the choice to opt out of
this program and display ads in a normal manner.
Since the time of its launch, the +1 button
has been adopted by more than 1 million websites, receiving 4 billion
impressions daily. This move by Google is very much on the lines of Facebook's
Like button. Since 2007, Facebook has been experimenting with their Like button
and have also come up with Sponsored Stories where friends can like ads and
that will be shared with everyone on the news feed. It has also been found out that ads that are
recommended by friends have more impact than normal ads.
Research conducted by Nielson on Facebook
has shown that 68% of people are more likely to recall an ad recommended by a
friend. So considering this research, it can be assumed that Google can
definitely expect the +1 button to work, but what can't be guaranteed is the
click-through rate for display ads.
What do you think about this concept? Will
you click on an ad recommended by your friend? Let us know in your comments below.
