Well, apart from the actual process of making the ad, where you should be paying close attention to the brief, checking out a brand's previous ads to understand what they like, and putting a lot of thought into your ad, there are a number of things you can do to win on BrandPotion.

Since the best way to win on BrandPotion is by getting votes, here's a step-by-step list of stuff you can do to get your ad voted for.

Step 1: Make an ad and upload it to BrandPotion. Check.
Step 2: Go vote for your own ad.
Step 3: Copy the link to your ad and mail it to your friends. Else, use the easy forwarding link on your ad's page.
Step 4: Tell your friends to vote for you! Do ask them to comment as well, as it validates their votes.
Step 5: Link the ad to Facebook, Orkut or Twitter, so you can get even more people to vote for you.

That should help you garner votes from people outside of BrandPotion's community as well.

As for the community, give and you shall receive. Talk to people. Check others' portfolios and their work on the competitions. If you must criticise, do so constructively.
