Nokia Crowdsources Ideas For New Applications
2011, Jun 29
Nokia is the
largest mobile platform in the world by volume, but it's the one phone
manufacturer significantly lacking in the smartphone market, currently led by Android
and Apple. To overcome this, they've launched a contest where they are asking
their consumers to send in ideas for web and game based applications for their
Nokia Series 40 phones.
Termed as Create 4 Millions , this global competition gives consumers a chance to see their own
ideas for applications developed and available in Nokia's Ovi Store. The
applications can be based on any of the three categories: health &
education, social networking & location, or games & infotainment. Consumers
can vote and comment on other entries. In addition to cash prizes, the final
winner will also get an all-expense paid trip to Nokia World and a chance to
meet the developers.
This is one
opportunity for Nokia to make their mass market phones more appealing to those
on the fence. Even though it still has a huge market, Nokia's Series 40 phones
have been losing their market share as smartphones have become cheaper. Nokia's
initiative will look to increasing the types and number of applications
available in the Ovi Store, to compete with Android's Market and iOS's App
Store.
