Star Plus launches its own application on iPad and iPhone becoming India's first general entertainment channel (GEC) to have its application available on iTunes. This move comes after Star Plus announced the global-same day telecast of its channel with English subtitles.

This application has been released in India and around 120 countries worldwide. It offers features like live TV and video-on-demand, which allow users to catch up on missed episodes and also recent updates on all the latest and upcoming shows.

The app also includes an interactive feature which allows users to connect with their favourite characters from the shows via audio blogs and pictures. Like many other applications, users can share their favourite content with friends via Facebook and Twitter.

What will be interesting to see is how the channel capitalises on advertising through the app. The advantage here, of course, will be that all advertising and programming will be track-able, i.e. who watches what and when. The 'asterisk' though is the popularity of the app and the penetration of Apple's products with respect to the target audience.
