Beepers,
Something you want to know about the BBC TopGear competition? Get your doubts cleared, have your questions answered. Ask other Beepers if they’d like to pair up so your concept/design could win.

This is urgent..I have a doubt with regard to the posting of concepts wrt to this contest..Are we allowed to post a concept and work on the print version of the same concept…thus resulting in one submission in two categories(BY THE SAME PERSON)? Also have a doubt wrt to the expectations of the brand in question..i somehow get the impression that they want some pictorial element in the ad for sure…(pl correct me if am wrong)does that mean copy based ads don’t stand a good chance of winning even if they are effective enough? Hope my questions aren’t too trivial.Awaiting your reply.Vardhini

Yes, you’re allowed to post a concept and work on a print version of the same idea. Do remember to select your concept when you’re uploading your print work. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll win two prizes, one for your print and one for your concept, but that if your print doesn’t adequately convey the idea, your concept still can.
A pictorial element is preferred because it’s something that catches a person’s attention immediately. However, that isn’t to say that there haven’t been effective copy-based ads. If you have a headline that’s clever or gripping, and proceed to explain it with great copy, the picture you use will act as an accessory than the defining point of your ad.
Here are some ads posted on our sister site Zooppa that did quite well and are heavily copy-based:

While the second and third ones use pictures, it’s the line that makes the difference. The first one doesn’t even use an image.
